New Newsletter Format
MusicFriends has a new email newsletter! The newsletter will now bring you the latest music education news and information every month. Also, it will be included in the email rather than as a link to the password protected online newsletter. Please add annen@menc.org to your contact list to make sure you receive the emails.

For those who cannot receive HTML newsletters, there will always be a link at the beginning that will take you to the latest newsletter on the MusicFriends Web site. The Web site is also in the progress of being updated, so watch the site in the coming months for new additions and improvements!

Music Booster Tip
This new section will feature booster tips submitted by MusicFriends. If you have a tip for other booster groups, send it to MusicFriends to be included in the next newsletter.

    For Your Music Teacher
    Plan an event with your music teacher to celebrate the National Anthem on September 14 with the National Anthem Project and schools across the country. Invite local teachers, parents, students, and community leaders to join in singing this song together. Plan an event to showcase the important role music teachers play in passing our American heritage from one generation to the next.     Add this article to your arsenal of arts advocacy tools! Remarks made by U.S. Assistant Secretary for Vocational and Adult Education Susan Sclafani are summarized, including her statement that "Under NCLB, arts are on a par with other core academic subjects" and "are a vital part of a complete education."

    Opportunity for Student Musicians
    JACK KENT COOKE YOUNG ARTIST AWARD - From the Top and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation announce that twenty-five student musicians (age 8-18) will be selected annually to receive Cooke Young Artist Awards. Each of these students will: receive up to $10,000 in support to assist with music-related needs (such as tuition, training, or equipment); perform on a live taping of From the Top's radio show; and participate in Cultural Leadership Training in order to become community advocates for the arts and create and implement his/her own performance outreach activity. Applications are now being accepted with the first round deadline of September 1, 2005. Second round deadline: November 1, 2005; final deadline: January 30, 2006.
